Larkin & Lacey: Funding Peace & Justice

When discussing the rather complex topic of justice within our culture today, it is imperative to acknowledge that no justice system is perfect. Many will contort the law into how they believe it should be rather than what it actually says.

Because of this, it is important to have effective advocacy groups that can handle the stressful actions that must be undertaken to initiate true change as well as impact. This notion of impact can be seen within the organization Aliento, which specializes in immigration and deportation law along with support for students and younger immigrants.

This is a youth based organization that strives to empower DACA-eligible people from Arizona with adequate knowledge about deportation law and how to ensure full understanding of all rights involved. They are effective at educating people and supplying them with the proper tools for effectively understanding immigration law and the implications involved with being undocumented. One advocate for human, civil, and migrant rights is the generous Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund, created to help and support the various organizations who represent reform and restraint of those who may take the law into their own hands. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are the Co-founders of the Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. They are also the founders of this impressive fund in the name of justice.

Their story speaks to their passion on the matter of various rights, and enlightens many to make sacrifices to preserve the peace and develop a more accurate understanding of how things work today regarding the law. The cliché “knowledge is power” certainly loses none of its power to its repetition.

Larkin and Larcey dedicated their settlement after an arrest that led to them founding this organization. The arrest was made by Sheriff Joe Arpaio in regard to information they revealed in their paper that claimed they were under threat of seizure by a Grand Jury. They then were arrested in the middle of the night and held in separate cells upon promptly being released with the charged dropped and an over three million dollar settlement dropping into their laps.

Here, they saw a golden opportunity to change some lives and give back to those who have been wronged by contortion of the justice system. This very blatant breech of freedoms the constitution blesses us with resulted in a resource pool for the prevention of that very same behavior ironically.

Mike and Jim also fund many other organizations who share the same passion for the important rights and freedoms of individuals. The governing authorities sometimes act with no shame by taking the law into their own hands and arresting two innocent voices of freedom. Through this fund, they have successfully reached out to various other advocates as well as raised the importance of awareness.

Larkin is responsible for the advertisement and Lacey is the executive director. They know more than anyone the power of even just one voice through their profession. But the power of hundreds or thousands proves to be remarkably powerful
