Rocketship Education Seeks to Develop the Minds of Tomorrow

Some areas of San Jose, California have been greatly stricken with poverty and offer very few educational opportunities to young children in these areas who could make a better life for themselves with the proper guidance. It was estimated that in the 1980’s low income children in San Jose had a much better chance of lifting themselves up out of poverty than they do today. Experts believe that education is the key to breaking this vicious cycle and it has been proven to have worked in numerous cases where children in poverty were properly educated and then able to not only break out of poverty but to give back to the very community in which they grew up. One charter school in the San Jose, California area is seeking to do just this. Rocketship Education is a non-profit network of public charter schools that attempt to target these low income communities that are so desperately craving better education for their children. The first school of this type opened back in 2007. Currently, there are 25 Rocketship Education centers throughout California. Many powerful industry CEO’s who are also local to California are also supporting early education for low income students who live in historically poverty stricken areas. These include, but are not limited to, the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, and famed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan. Much like Rocketship Education, these business leaders realize that the best way to propel these children towards a better life is to give them the best educational opportunities possible and give them the tools necessary to succeed. Rocketship Education is seeking to build an entire network of knowledgeable educators who can share and learn ideas from one another to best engage the students and leave them better prepared to take on the challenges of the world. In the mind of Rocketship Education, knowledge certainly is power and it is also the key to ending the cycle of poverty we see so frequently in today’s day and age.
